Let me first start off by saying that as a mother/parent, we never like to see our kids in pain, no matter their age.

I took yesterday off, Indigenous People’s Day. It was a student free day, so I used a “mental health day” aka sick day.

My son, who is 25, had a dental appointment, so I took him. We thought it was just going to be a fairly quick and easy appointment, but nope, we were there for about 3-4 hours. He ended getting 3 extractions out of the 5 he needed, 4 of them are his wisdom teeth. He wanted all 5 done, but the doctor advised against it, saying another appointment will need to be scheduled for the other two extractions.

He already had anxiety about going to the dentist, so his diagnosis compounded his anxiety. He has overcrowding going on, which, as I’m sure you know, can lead to a host of other issues. He was not a happy camper at all.

From where I sat, I was able see right in the room he was in, and his motion and movements told me he was not ok with any of this. Being who I am, I started to get emotional, and had to fight back tears. I did run into the room for a quick minute when the doctor and nurses had walked out, and gave my son a quick hug and kiss on the head with some words of encouragement.

When I left the room, I put on my earphones, turned up the volume so I didn’t have to hear to dental equipment noises, and tried to read the book I brought.

After his appointment, he went to get his RX filled, and I bought him some chicken noodle/tomato soup, since the doctor told him he “will be on a liquid to soft diet for a few days.” When we finally got home, he showered, ate, took his meds, then chilled and slept the rest of the night.

I did have to laugh at one point. I remembered a convo Keith had with his ex wife where his ex told him that their daughter had Keith’s “small jaw and big honker teeth” guess who else has the same issue?

It was an emotional day at the dentist for this Mama!

How was your day?
